 What if success wasn't measured by our achievements but by how well we unleashed our gifts and talents in the world?
No matter what we achieve in life it will not produce lasting fulfillment. After every win, we just up the ante. A more dependable source of joy and fulfillment is using your true gifts. Research from those who have studied "peak" experiences shows that ecstatic moments are most available when we are being stretched to the edge of our abilities and are receiving regular feedback on how we're doing. If you've ever played tennis with a worthy opponent you've felt the exhilaration of being lured to the precipice of your potential and how exciting it is. The same goes when we've been given a stretch assignment. You know, the one where your first thought was, "I can't do that." When you did, you were forever changed. Expanded into more of who you really are. Without those hefty challenges in life- the ones we so desperately try to avoid, our character would remain untested and our strengths unrevealed.
Recent surveys show that 50-65% of people would like to change jobs. Many are in pursuit of better pay, some want to switch because they don't get along with their bosses. The majority leave because they think they aren't getting a chance to use their real gifts and talents.Life becomes meaningless when we're living one that's not our own.
The word vocation has at its root- "vocatio" for summons or invitation. When we feel called, we are no longer being pushed by what we "must" do, or in reaction to a situation we want to get away from. Instead, we feel pulled towards a higher aspiration for who we can be. We are drawn towards our potential to expand in some way, often in service to the greater good.
